Rehabilitation Process

The goal of the Southwest Regional Rehabilitation Center's orthopedic rehabilitation program is to evaluate and treat patients experiencing diseases and dysfunction's involving the muscles, joints, and bones in order to prevent related disabilities, enhance the performance of the musculoskeletal system and promote maximum function and independence.

We serve patients recovering from many types of musculoskeletal disorders including:

These patients may be experiencing complications such as weakness, tightness, in coordination, imbalance, pain, swelling, inflammation, degeneration, low endurance and loss of function and work time. The orthopedic rehabilitation program uses an interdisciplinary team approach to achieve the best possible outcomes. Our Medical Director and physiatrist direct the team, which collectively specialize in internal and physical rehabilitative medicine. Other team members include: physical and occupational therapists, therapeutic recreational specialist and rehabilitation nurses.

Referrals are received from many medical specialty areas including Orthopedics, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Rheumatology and general practice.

Inpatient Rehabilitation

Once admitted to the program, treatment begins with a thorough evaluation to identify the patient's strengths and weaknesses and establish treatment goals. Each patient's program is tailored to meet his/her individual needs and is modified as progress occurs.

The inpatient program provides 24-hour-a-day physician and nursing support to address the medical and nursing needs of the patient. Individual and group therapy sessions are conducted for 3-5 hours a day to address the patient's physical, emotional and/or vocational needs.

Participation by family and/or significant others in the rehabilitation process is strongly encouraged for patient success at discharge. All team members are involved in-patient and family teaching. As discharge approaches, patients and families are counseled regarding the resources available to help make a smooth transition home or to another care giving setting.

Arrangements are made for those who would benefit from continued therapies in an outpatient setting.

Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation

The outpatient rehabilitation program is designed for the individual who is able to live in the community, but requires ongoing therapeutic services similar to the inpatient program. The rehabilitation team provides coordinated rehabilitation services including assessments, treatments, and follow-up care.

Outpatient services include:

Outpatient services are scheduled according to the patient's needs, generally two to three visits scheduled and patients are seen by appointment. Assistance in coordinating transportation is offered through the medical social work department for patients who need assistance to and from appointments.
