Therapeutic Recreation

Therapeutic Recreation increases motivation and eases feelings of idleness, loneliness, and depression, which can prevent progress in the healing process. At Southwest Regional Rehabilitation Center the Recreation Therapist evaluates a patient's leisure needs, develop a working leisure program, and plan for continuing activities at home.

Specific to the rehabilitation setting, Recreation Therapists emphasize the abilities of the individual - not the disabilities - to assist a patient in developing new leisure time interests.

A regular schedule of recreational activities including community outings and in-hospital leisure activities assists patients to regain confidence in a social setting following an injury or illness.
