Electronic Medical Records System at Southwest Regional Rehabilitation Center

In October of 2005, Southwest Regional Rehabilitation Center “officially” began its transition from paper medical records to electronic medical records for its Inpatient Clinical Services with the implementation of software developed by VisualMED Clinical Solutions Corporation. Reducing errors, as well as improved and faster communications between care providers are the primary goals associated with implementing this system. VisualMED’s “Clinical Information System” is a facility-wide Electronic Medical Record directed by Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) at its core whose development is based on 10 years of experience. The VisualMED Clinical System seamlessly integrates orders entered by physicians with nursing and other clinical functions. It also includes an automatically generated medication administration record (MAR), as well as doctors’ and nurses’ notes. Given the need to access clinical and laboratory data for the purpose of decision-making, results reporting and clinical data entry are integrated as well. Designed by clinicians with more than 20 years hands-on experience in the medical care environment, the VisualMED Clinical System is designed to respond to the unique needs of each of the medical and surgical specialties

The VisualMED Clinical System is interfaced with other systems that Southwest had in place to provide the easiest, most efficient transition possible. Our current system includes interfaces, which provide: immediate pharmacist verification for Physician-ordered medications, automated billing for those medications once administered, electronic lab result reporting, and immediate viewing of transcribed reports, making efficient use of pre-existing (legacy) software and services.

With implementation of our Outpatient programs in early Spring, we will have completed our transition to the Electronic Medical Record System. As with all systems, though, we will continue to strive to improve our existing practices to provide the very best care for our patients.
