Southwest Regional Rehabilitation Center Current Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteer Patient Companion
- Provides constant observation for at risk patients, remaining with
them at all times and staying awake at all times. Does not take
phone calls or have visitors while sitting with patient.
- Notifies Nursing staff for exceptions from the patient’s established
plan of care. For example, reporting any signs of distress or unusual
communication (verbal or non-verbal) to the RN.
- Observes patient and intervenes if necessary to prevent physical
injury or patient elopement.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the proper use of call light system.
- Interacts professionally with patients and families.
- Notifies nursing staff if break is needed and stays with patient until
a staff member is present to relieve them of duty.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Nursing Unit Volunteer
- Assist patients with meals; tray set-up, open containers, cut food, etc.
- Visit and read to patients, and assist patients with recreational activities such as games, puzzles, playing cards, etc.
- Sing or play musical instrument for patient’s entertainment and enjoyment.
- Take patients for walks on the Center grounds as directed by Nursing.
- Considers specific needs based on each patient’s age group.
- Assists patients with reading their mail/ cards and the newspaper.
- Deliver mail and/or flowers to patients.
- Pass linens.
- Pick-up additional patient meals or meal items from kitchen as directed by Nursing.
- Assists the Nursing Unit with clerical duties as needed.
- Performs other volunteer services as deemed appropriate by the Nurse Manager.
Therapy Services Volunteer
- Transport patients to/from therapy gyms.
- Accompanies Center van drivers to assist with patient transport needs as appropriate.
- Stocks linen and supplies (sheets, towels, pillow cases, US gel, tissues, sanitizer wipes, MBS suite food items, etc.)
- Considers specific needs based on each patient’s age group.
- Inventory rehab supplies to assist with ordering process (sock aides, reachers, dressing sticks, long handle sponges and shoe horns, etc.)
- Conducts therapy equipment maintenance checks in accordance with instructions in Outpatient Team Room procedure binder, and under the direction of SRRC staff.
- Sanitize equipment in therapy gyms, and assist Therapy staff with preparing and cleaning treatment areas before and after therapy sessions.
- Photocopy and collate patient education and orientation materials; inpatient and outpatient, for all disciplines.
- Maintain organization of storage cupboards in therapy gyms.
- Participate in activity/ craft groups with patients as identified by therapy/ nursing staff as appropriate.
- Research assigned patient specific education materials from list of approved sources.
- Observes therapy sessions and is available to assist therapist as directed and appropriate.
